Lately this blog seems to be more and more about my progress as an artist and less and less about the actual scene. I'm working on fixing this but at the same time things aren't slowing down with class. Been trying to step back into the production game while schools been started and these past couple of weeks have been productive! Played a set during Rock the Yard, a charity event for my fraternity at UIUC - recorded and posted below; finished and submitted my remix of Deadmau5's "SOFI Needs a Ladder," vote for me below if you dig; and finally finished a little DJ tool for closing with one of my favorite mixes of Bag Raider's "Shooting Star." Well, back to school was not as much of a boost for TrackLayer as previously mentioned. Due to a lot of outside pressures I've been forced to take time away from the blog to handle some personal issues. I won't stop coming by, but for now I can't guarantee a steady stream of posts. Man.
I would never have guessed that my spring break would take THAT much out of me… but it did. So I'm dealing with it. I've only been back at school two days and already feeling the strain.
Among the many things I've been trying to do lately, one of them has been to POST here. Not just any post mind you, I've got some quality videos from my spring break to share!

Last week me and muh bud Doug drove from little old Champaign all the way to Montreal to visit a buddy of his (and mine now) and to see a little bit of music since we are oh-so-deprived of it down here in the Chambana. Namely, we went up to catch Saintwood's new Woodwork festival, and I Love Neon. Initially, we had penned to drive to Miami for the infamous UMF but alas we decided to fuck that shit. Because we would gone outta our minds with the amount of driving.

At Woodwork, we managed to catch Sound of Stereo, Brodinski, Calvin Harris, and Laidback Luke. All of which performed admirably. Sadly, we came too late to the party as we missed Nero's set, which was a pretty big downer.

The following weekend we caught Lazer Sword, Flying Lotus, and Benga at I Love Neon. Sadly though, Benga's set was on the poor side, but not due to him. Apparently some snob near the venue called the cops, and asked them to turn it the hell down. So they came, and requested that the "low" be turned down. Now I won't say that "low" is everything in music. But I will say that it is definitely a third of it. Low is also pretty key to an event geared towards Dubstep. Despite Montreal police failures, a solid set.

During all this fun i got a chance to chill with Liam of Love Thy Brother, these two hot DJs on the up in Montreal at the moment. He shared some musical know how with me and due to this, I've got some new stuff for ya'll. Much thanks to Liam and the Saintwoods crew, and all them boys up in Montreal. I also got to meet the writers of The New Montreal, a very popular blog that you may or may not have seen on the HypeM charts. Absolute great dudes (and gal) and i suggest you go check it out! They're on our blogroll now, so hit em up!

Hey all. HOT little treat for you guys today, the nice fellows in Hot Pink Delorean took some time off their busy schedules to give us a little picture of their lives and thoughts in an interview! Tunes after the read, CHECK:

TMLZ: Wanna start by thanking you guys for agreeing to do this - it means a lot to us here at TrackLayer. Where did the alias come from? I read on UrbanDictionary that it's uh.. ..yeahhh..

HPD: HAHA ya man that urban dictionary thing came way after we were a group. The name came from the fact that we're all nerds and love back to the future so we just added some neon to it ; )

TMLZ: Originally though, you guys were known as a Drum ‘N Bass hit Terravita? What are your plans for Terravita?

HPD: Terravita is actually still releasing a bunch of tunes right now our newest release came out yesterday (march 1st 2010) the tunes are "I wanna rock" and " Bookhouse boys" on Subsonik sound. We also remixed the ak1200 classic "Drowning" will be coming Icey's label as well as dnb remixes we did of our HPD stuff. Keep an eye out for our stuff on Subsonik sounds as well as some huge surprises in 2010.

TMLZ: What can we expect from Hot Pink Delorean in the Future? The “Party Favour Remix EP” is coming out soon, do you have a date penned yet?

HPD:The Party Favour remix EP should be out in the beginning of April on Pieces of 8 records and we have some stuff coming on Kissy Sellouts label San City High. We're doing some collabs with Virtuoso and Bad Rabbits as well as some more high profile remixes that i'm not at liberty to talk about just yet but we'll be sure to keep you updated. Also the IAWPSB remixes will be coming out shortly as well. We just finished a single with Mustard Pimp for Dim Mak called rock and some stuff for Donald Glaudes label.

TMLZ: Moving from DnB to Electro is a pretty interesting shift.. What would you say is Hot Pink Delorean’s sound?

HPD: We feel like our sound primarily comes from our mix downs. We love to make all different styles of electronic music wether it be dutch house or some rockesque shit to hip hop crossovers to prog whatever so our sound really comes from the actual quality of the engineering which we do completely in house.

TMLZ: How long have you been in the electronic music scene?

HPD: collectively about 40 years lol

TMLZ: Where and how did you all meet?

HPD: We all met in the DnB scene about a decade ago just from being around the same shit. Chris and I used to hate each other but we seem to be doing ok now :P

TMLZ: What do you guys get up to in your spare time?

HPD: spare time that sounds awesome whats that? if you wanna get an idea of the shit we're into though check our blog hotpinkdelorean.blogspot.com

TMLZ: You guys are in Boston now – My younger brother just moved there, where's the sickest place to hear good music?

HPD: depends what you consider good music Boston is a fickel city I'd say Cambridge though.

TMLZ: When you guys do gigs – what do you look for? What makes a gig “perfect?”

HPD: first off a gig is NEVER perfect but we just feed off energy so if the crowd is hype the show is a success for us. Extra alcohol doesn't hurt anything either.

TMLZ: Was there ever a point when you were playing live that you thought “Wow, these kids are all here for us?” When was it?

HPD: I think the first time it really hit us was our first time in Stockholm Sweden about 2 years ago sold out show about 900 people just us. It was one of my favorite parties we've ever played and people got fuckin DOWN naked people runnin around everywhere it was crazy

TMLZ: Who would you say are your influences? Other than Marty McFly.

HPD: we have such diverse musical backgrounds its really kind of eclectic we take influences from everything so its a hard thing to pinpoint but definitly people like kraftwerk, prodigy, daft punk (stock electronic music influences) alot of hip hop and garage metal, rock, jazz, classical fuck man everything.

TMLZ: Is there anyone producing today that, given the choice, you would work with? Why?

HPD: I'd love to do a tune with the Bloody Beetroots mostly because we're all absolutely insane so I think something completely fucked up would come from it. I'd love to do something with RJD2 or APhex twin :P

TMLZ: What kinds of equipment do you use when your DJing? What do you use to produce?

HPD: for dj'ing we use a stage mic and serrato through cdj's if they got em vinyl if they dont. Production wise we use cubase.

TMLZ: If you had one piece of advice to give someone looking to get into the electronic music scene, what would it be?

HPD: grow some thick skin because people hate on you every day especially where you live so you have to learn to ignore it. Have a plan music is 40% business 55% who you know and 5% talent.

TMLZ: Finally, what’s your opinion on promotion-through-blogging?

HPD: If it weren't for blogs we wouldn't be doing what we're doing right now THANKS BLOGS!

TMLZ: Thanks again for having this interview.. Personally I’d never have guessed a year ago, when I was grabbing “I Am What Porno Should Be” off of iTunes that I’d be talking to you guys. 2ManyDJs In Macau

This post is about 3 days too late but better late than never so here goes!

Last Saturday a few boys including myself and a bottle of the cheapest vodka on this planet made the roughly 1 hour ferry trek over to Macau (Asia's Las Vegas for all the Aussies and Americans reading this) to see 2ManyDJs live at the Venetian Macau. I personally didnt have the highest expectations for this event, first of all the venue was a cafe in a casino, before we got there I just wasn't picturing big things. ANYWAYS the entire event was completely sold out, more than 1000 people were packed into this darkened corner of the Venetian looking up at these guys as they worked their magic. This was seriously one of the better gigs I have been to so far, complete with hardcore banging music, lotsa drinking, a raging crowd, and even a little crowd surfing!

I find that there really are two camps on this issue: posting your own material. Blogs either scorn it and say its "unprofessional" or they are posting there own stuff, and not because they're ego maniacs but because they want an honest opinion from a crowd that knows what's up. I fall into the latter category. And here is my newest mixtape.

For those who were unaware there is a contest going down known as NGDJ, or Next Generation DJ. The 1st Place winner wins CDJ-2000s, management, a place at WMC, among other things. You can read more about the prizes here.

The first round works like so: your mix needs to have at least 200 votes to move into round two, where you make another mix and that is judged by a panel of professionals.

I was splashing around on SoundCloud the other day when I came across a remix by these dudes "The Original Fakes." Basically they are some buck nasty dudes. They're from Turin, an Italian city at the feet of the Alps. The crew breaks down like this: Dario and Davide. Dario writes the tunes and manages the sounds. Davide is the DJ, he reps the clean transitions and can play nonstop for.. forever, apparently. He also helps out with production and music.
They've been working together since 2000, where they met one night at a disco (Dario was MCing while Davide was DJing). After some traveling and playing abroad and long hours spent behind the keyboard they decided they'd built enough background to begin actually making tunes, and they set up a studio together.
Fans of Ed Banger ("Ed Banger rules" - Dario) as well as The Killers, The Beatles, White Stripes, NIN, and the Killers; they've span quite a few genres but take particularily to the nu-rave movement (as do I). For now they're throwing parties every friday in Turin called "Spank!" where they play their tunes and get buck.
They released their first EP last September titled "We Steal Music" which is a five part music video compilation that tells a story, watch it here on The Original Fake's Myspace. They've also got all their remixes & mixes up on The Original Fake's SoundCloud.

Not so long ago i recall a conversation me and Mack were having on the subject of "Mashups" and what we thought of them. Naturally, to me, a mashup is a step lower than any track, remix or original, I said to him. In retrospect, I am here again, posting yet another Mashup. I feel like my previous opinion had to do with the fact that the mashups I was hearing were low quality, rap and pop tracks slammed together to create some sort of "ultimate monster banger" out of two "huge" songs. But in recent months, I've learned that they're insanely useful, as learning tools and performance tools. Without further ado, here is my newest mashup, CHECK:

Last night was pretty deamy, not gonna lie. We show up a tiny bit late, and Burns is up on the stage rippin it and throwin' mad beats down. He ripped out "Hey!" and A-Trak's "Heads Will Roll" along with plenty of others, and then Ghostland Observatory came on up. I was pretty impressed by them to say the least, and they managed to rock out hard. Great performers, the lights and everything were synced and absolutely psycho. Burns came back out and threw down some intermission beats and got everyone bumpin so when deadmau5 came on out everyone was going nuts. plenty of people brought homemade "Mau5-masks" with glowing lights so it was a pretty ridiculous scene, the crowd was going nuts. He found time to squeeze in some extra love for "You Need a Ladder" with some cool Deadmau5/Zelda linked graphic displays, and he had a cool Bill O'Reilly scene paired to "To Play Us Out" which was nuts. He even found time to throw the Hard Halloween "Hard Intro" up, which drops a quote from the cult-sci-fi-classic "The Brain from Planet Arous." He wore a "blank" mask, which apparently he passed around to the line before i got there, and everyone got to sign his mask. Was pretty pissed when i heard that, but oh well.
